Decision Making System

We often go down long loops of chatting about things, and we’re like both right (or both smart enough to argue our point properly), so when we catch ourselves in a loop, here’s a decision making framework.

What is the root problem?

  • Keep asking why until you hit a root cause

Does solving this meaningfully move the needle on our top 3 priorities?

(As of June 2025: increasing traffic, improving existing products, building new products)

  • If no → defer
  • If yes → proceed

Is this a one-time issue, a recurring operational issue, or a strategic decision?

One-time

Is it less than 10 mins?

  • If yes, do it now
  • If not, is doing this higher priority than our current tasks?
    • If yes → do it soon
    • If no → Add to linear backlog

Recurring Operational

Is there a system for this problem?

  • If yes, is it working properly?
    • If not, is fixing it higher priority than our current top projects?
      • If yes → do it soon
      • If no → Add to linear backlog
  • If no, should we create a system?
    • Is creating this system higher priority than our current top projects?
      • If yes → do it soon
      • If no → Add to linear backlog

Strategic/Direction

Does a document exist for this?

  • If not, create one now
  • If yes, is the current document missing something?
    • If yes, update the document now until we agree

Products can be internal or external. The key difference between products and kits & tools is that we use the kits and tools to create the products. Products are ideas of things we want to use. Kits and tools are things we want so we can build the things we want to use (the things we sell).
